A large garden on the edge of the North Downs
The planting in this garden is inspired by the meadow planting of the adjacent countryside. A base palette of grasses is blended with umbellifers to provide harmony, texture and contrast. Rejuvenating colours of lime green, white and yellow create a fresh, stylised meadow palette. Key plants include Angelica archangelica, Deschampsia cespitosa, Trollius europaeus and Iris sibirica ‘Alba’. Accents of dusky pink Astrantia, Sanguisorba and the aubergine foliage of Anthriscus sylvestris ‘Ravenswing’ provide softer, tonal counterpoints. Highlights of mauve Cirsium heterophyllum and Hesperis matronalis complete this abundant composition.
Around the swimming pool parallel lines of select perennials and grasses run in repeats through loose planting, referencing the strong, clean lines of the hard landscaping. Three multi-stemmed Malus ‘Everest’ further punctuate and layer the composition of the space, introducing height, framing and a subtle sense of enclosure.
